Wildcat Wood – Mersehead Beach – Cycle
ACTIVITY TYPE : Cycle, Gravel Bike, MTB
TIME : 1.30 – 2 Hours
DISTANCE : 14 miles (Up to, can be shortened)
A lovely warm up to the region. This ride takes in mainly tarmac roads but has an optional more challenging off-road gravel loop around Wildcat Wood. Wildcat Wood is a little steep in places with some small granite stones hidden in the grassy track. Even if you don’t cycle it it’s well worth a walk around.
Mersehead Beach which sits beyond the RSPB reserve, is a beautiful expanse of sand and shells which at low tide is spectacular. The sand is firm enough to ride on around the tideline and makes a great sound with the shells crackling under wheel. Views to Sandyhills, Southerness Lighthouse the Lake District Fells and even as far as St Bees Head, Cumbria.
Optionally you can also take a look at the Needles’s Eye Natural Arch which is only a few metres beyond the gate opposite the entrance to the Graveyard Road. If you are feeling more adventurous if you follow the path through the arch you can also take in a walk for about a mile along the shoreline to the waterfall near Lots’ Wife (a prominent rock sunk in the sand).
